I thought this day would come a LOT later. As I was putting in a show that Grace had begged me for all morning, she said, "Mama, poop" and pointed to her bum.
Because we are trying to get Grace to at least be comfortable with the toilet, I didn't question it and said, "let's go potty!"
We are in no ways potty training right now. Mostly, we just let her sit on the potty if she asks to, but rarely does anything happen.
Much to my surprise, I took her diaper off and there was nothing in it. I thought for sure that she was telling me that she had already pooped.
Then imagine my surprise as she sat there and pooped in the toilet!!
Really? Did that just happen?
I guess the question now is not if Grace is ready and capable to potty train but if I am ready to start? How do you even start this process? How do you reward?
All you experienced moms out there, help!
I thought I had more time to research, but I don't want to miss the window of opportunity if she is willing right now!
One thing I do know is that Grace needed a reward for her accomplishment....so she indulged in a few M&Ms!

I'm not sure if I'm the one to be giving advice, so this is more opinions based on my personal "research" :)
1. a physical reward (like m&m's) will not be to their detriment later...eventually they will forget to ask for it and then you'll be done one day. (usually not long after they've really 'got it.)
2. (you did great by 'easing' into the idea, which would have been my 1st) so 2nd, go for it when they're ready! (believe me, waiting til later means they know how to be more stubborn. :)
3. don't punish for accidents...unless the accident was on purpose or as a consequence for refusing to go when told (b/c you know that peepee dance meant she needed to go and she flat out lied and said she didn't and then peed on the floor...and then she had to clean up her own mess.)
This is long enough...so no more opinions for now. :)
And lastly, YEA that she asked! How awesome is that? (I only had 1 with self-motivated interest...you can probably guess which)
1 confession:
When the title of your post came up on my list, I assumed you were pregnant. haha...(I probably shouldn't have admitted that...I didn't like when people admitted they thought my ambiguous titles were referencing another mouth to feed)
everything beth said is great advice. my mom made up a basket of surprises and every time he went in the potty he got to choose one. he got pee downpat really fast, poop came a LOT later, so lucky you, crossing my fingers that she keeps it up. Definitely go with it if she is ready and willing. maybe keep her in pullups for awhile so she can go by herself, unless you are ready to move her to underwear. Aidan wore only wore underwear at home for at least six months because I wasn't ready to deal with accidents while out and about. And I despise little potties, but if you don't mind uaing one for her, it might be better for her since she is so young(if you want her to learn to go by herself.) good luck! it is so wonderful once they have it down. and I thought you were pregnant too.
To be honest we skipped the whole pull up thing... it gave our oldest the feel of a diaper and she just would go in it. Big Girl Underwear! Let her pick them out... Be prepared for accidents... they happen. We did the whole nudey baby thing with A. It gave immediate feed back that she was going. Not with the boy... just big boy underwear for him. If she is ready it will be pretty easy. We missed the window of opportunity with our 3rd... vacation is not the time to try. :) But yay for Grace! (We used Fruit Snacks as a reward because that was a special treat for them)
all i want to say is WOW! way to go with your AWESOME parenting skills!!!
The poop fairy has visited the jennings! Yay.
